My background is as an ecosystem ecologist and biogeochemist. Much of my prior and current research focuses on the controls over nutrient limitation and carbon storage in moist tropical and alpine tundra ecosystems, and how these controls help us understand the response of such systems to human-induced environmental change. Of late, some of my work has begun to concentrate on the effects of changing biogeochemical cycles on human health. These can include a wide range of links, from air and water pollution, to changes in food supply, to shifts in the ecology of disease.
